Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
The Schiphol airport, located in the Haarlemmermeer region, is the world's 16th biggest airport for passenger traffic and 16th biggest for cargo transportation. Outside of Amsterdam and Haarlem, it is the third largest employment center in the AMA. The airport fueled much of Amsterdam's business growth when it expanded in the 1980's. At 13 square kilometers and comprising such diverse services as a retail and leisure center, hotels, offices, an annex of the Rijksmuseum, a rooftop viewing area called the Panoramaterras, and even a mortuary, Schiphol is a veritable "airport city", a destination in itself. It is the home base of five airlines, including the Netherlands largest, KLM. Fifty two million passengers were served by 91 airlines to 301 locations in 2011(including 274 nonstop routes) throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and the Caribbean.
