Sub-Regions Economic Specialization
Through their unique sets of history, government regulation, and human and natural resource capital, the individual sub-regions of the AMA specialize in certain industries. Most of the current growth can be attributed to the AMA's sub-regions. Amsterdam however, is still the core city and accounts for 44% of the metropolitan region's GRP as of 2011.
Because of a global shrinkage in consumer demand, industrial cities such as Ijmond and Zaanstreek and port cities like Zaanstad were hit hardest; however demand for aviation services and wholesale has returned with the rebound of the economy. These regions are now returning to status quo faster than other regions.
The best performing sub-regions from 2001-2011 were Haarlemmermeer, Almere/Lelystad, and Amsterdam. Haarlemmermeer thrived on its domination in the wholesale; transport and storage; aviation; and industrial sectors. Almere/Lelysted were strong in business services and wholesale. Haarlem and Gooi en Vechstreek were not strong in production and instead concentrated in creating high-quality living environments and consumerism. |
