The Netherlands has many fine higher education institutions (HEIs) and frequently appears in lists of the top universities in the world. According to the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) from the Center for World-Class Universities, a total of 12 Dutch universities made the top 400 and of those, two can be found in the AMA. They are highlighted in the table from that ranking.

VU University
Vrije University was originally founded as a Christian university in 1880 and while it still retains its social consciousness, the university has opened up to the public. VU is primarily a research university. The campus location in the business district of Zuidas gives students and faculty ample opportunity to interact with the private sector businesses.
